Byasa sp. in Hong Kong
The Atrophaneura alcinous mansonensis (Fruhstorfer, 1901) – Chinese Windmill had long been listed in the Hong Kong Butterfly List. Recently, many enthusiasts had recognised Byasa confusus (Fruhstorfer, 1901) as the only recognised species for Hong Kong.
To clear up the confusion, we conducted a survey at HKLS to verify the validity of this species.
A. alcinous had been recorded on various peaks in Hong Kong, namely Mt Baker, Mt Nicholson, Victoria Peak and the peaks on Lantau Island. The butterfly was described in detail in Bascombe et al’s book – The Butterflies of Hong Kong, including a drawing of the genitalia. For our exercise, we had obtained two specimens, one from Dr B on the race of Mt Baker from Hong Kong and one from a dealer in mainland China. The results can be seen in the following pictures.
The genitalia of the Hong Kong race match those of Byasa confusus mansonensis (Fruhstorfer, 1901) as illustrated by Dr Bozano in his book – Guide to the Butterflies of the Palearctic Region as well as in the drawing by Bascombe. While the genitalia of the mainland race indicate a different species, which is clearly distinguished by the characteristics in the harpe of the valva. In short, we concluded that the A. a. mansonensis previously recorded in Hong Kong should be treated as B. c. mansonensis.
The mainland specimen, which is easily obtainable, as well as live immatures, should therefore not be lightly considered as B. confusus and should never be released in Hong Kong.

Ypthima imitans Elwes & Edwards 1893 now confirmed in Hong Kong
It is now confirmed that both Ypthima imitans and Ypthima motscholskyi are in Hong Kong.
It seems Ypthima imitans prefer higher grounds on Lantau Island. In fact both species are found almost in the same area on Lantau Island.
The genitalia below of Y. imitans is confirmed by Dr. Yoshinobu Uémura. I wish to thank Dr. Uémura for his kind assistance.

Hasora vitta (Butler, 1870) DNA Bar Coding
“The complete mitochondrial genome of Hasora vitta (Butler, 1870) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae)“.

has been published on Taylor & Francis Online. It is available at: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.3109/19401736.2015.1063048
Abstract: The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Hasora vitta was sequenced and analyzed in the study. The mitogenome is 15282bp in size, including 37 genes and a putative control region. Thirteen protein-coding genes all start with a typical ATN codon, expect that COI gene uses CGA as its initial codon. Majority of the 13 PCGs have a complete termination codon (TAA or TAG) except for COII and ND4 have a single T residue. All tRNAs have typical clover-leaf secondary structure, except for tRNASer(AGN), in which the dihydrouridine (DHU) arm is a simple loop. In the sampled species of Hesperiidae, Hasora vitta, Choaspes benjaminii, Ampittia dioscorides, the remaining sampled species, Celaenorrhinus maculosus (Daimio tethys, Ctenoptilum vasava), Potanthus flavus (Polytremis nascens, Ochlodes venata), are recovered in phylogenetic analyses with high supports.

Notocrypta paralysos 窄紋袖弄蝶
首張香港野外成蟲記錄照
The first photographic record of adult in the wild of HK
HKLS is always devoted herself to the science of lepidopterology. In recent years, Mr. James Young is conducting a study of HK skippers and has discovered eggs and larvae of Notocrypta paralysos, a species never been recorded before, in various places in Hong Kong. However, its adult form was still hard to find despite the wide spread of immature forms in the wild. It was until April 2014, a HKLS member managed to have a sighting in Lantau Island and got a first photographic record of the adult in the wild. This sighting also complemented the missing information of the study of HK skippers.
HKLS will announce details of Notocrypta paralysos in near future. Please stay tuned.

Straight-banded Tree Brown 玉帶黛眼蝶 Lethe verma
香港首個玉帶黛眼蝶的紀錄是在1995年4月於大帽發現,此後只是偶有傳出零星的個案。2014年5月初,本會一會員在新界東北林區以照片再一次紀錄倒這難得一見的黛眼蝶。
Lethe verma was recorded in April, 1995 at Tai Mo Shan for the first time in HK. After that only occasional report of sightings. In early May this year, a photographic record of this rarely seen species was made by a HKLS member in the woodland of North West New Territories.
